from Lockerbie Academy - Thursday 4 September 2008
Figeac 2008
On the 21st of August, 27 pupils and three members of
staff from France arrived at Lockerbie Academy. They were welcomed
by their pen pals. Every day they went on excursions and spent
the weekend with the hosts doing different activities like swimming,
shopping and sightseeing the local area. The Scottish students
have enjoyed speaking French all week and discovering the French
culture. The exchange has been running since 1979 and is still
thriving thanks to all the staff here and in Figeac. We will be
keeping in touch with our pen pals and can’t wait to see them
all next year. C’etait super!

The Bulb Man
Lockerbie Academy pupils and staff are uniting in an enterprising
activity to raise funds to buy outside furniture which will eventually
be taken to the ‘new’ school.
The project involves pupils and staff taking orders for “top quality”
bulbs. The profits from these sales will then be used to purchase
planter/seats for the playground.
It is hoped that this year, people will buy their bulbs from “The
Bulb Man” catalogue which are available from every pupil/staff
member and from the School Office. Mrs Gilliland has very kindly
agreed to process all the orders.
Prepaid orders are due in to the School Office by Monday 8 September
2008. The bulbs will be delivered by pupil/staff contacts in early
October before the school holidays.
The school have decided to offer prizes to the staff/pupils in
order to encourage sales.
S5 Charities
This year’s Charities to be supported by the school are SAMH (Scotland’s
leading Mental Health Charity) and SSPCA (Scotland’s Animal Welfare
Charity). Organising the fund raising will be a team led by Mairi
Aitken and Craig Stoddart and aided by their committee – Nicola
Shortreed, Katie McQuade, Louise Telfer, Jack Matthews and Sarah
Thomson.
The Charities were agreed after much debate and hopefully many
events will be organized during the year. Mairi and Craig will
let S1/2, S3/4 and senior students know about the chosen charities
at the first Year Group assemblies of the session.
The school will also support other Charity events including Jeans
for Genes and Children in Need.
House Captains
After interviews by Heads of House and Principal Teacher of Pupil
Support eight House Captains were chosen for this session:
Annan House – Emily Jackson and Liam Scott
Dryfe House – Hollie Dickson and Dora Lewis
Kirtle House – Martin Donaldson and Jemma Dunlop
Milk House – Craig Prater and Nicola Shortreed
The House Captains are part of the St Steering Committee, and
will organize two House Assemblies as well as House competitions
e.g. Can Cook, Will Cook and House Games. They also chair and
minute House Council meetings. Good luck to the House Captains
in what will be a very busy year.
School Meals
The price of school meals has been increased as follows:-
Secondary Pupil 2 course meal or Meal Deal 1, 2 and 3 - £1.65
Secondary Meal Deal 4 - £1.45
Uniform
In school, we now carry a
stock of black jackets in the full range of sizes from S1 to S6.
Whilst not making these compulsory, they certainly do look smart
and we would wish to encourage our students to wear them. They
are supplied by Academy Uniforms, Glasgow and are priced at £28.
Every purchase receives a free Lockerbie Academy ‘crest’ badge
(normally £2).
Academy Uniforms were in school
on the morning that the school photographs were taken (29 August).
Please contact Mrs Sutton in the School Office if you wish further
details. A variety of payment terms are available, and if you
wish to enquire more about this option, please contact Mrs Sutton.
