News from Lockerbie Academy - Thursday 9 October 2008

Lockerbie Academy Fairtrade Group

After the summer term and as a result of the South African day it was decided to establish Fairtrade groups of both staff and pupils. We have written a Fairtrade policy and had two meetings where decisions have been made to take Fairtrade forward in Lockerbie Academy.

We have had a successful assembly which involved pupils being told about Fairtrade and participating in a Fairtrade quiz. We are also holding a tuck shop on Friday October 10th and there will be many more exciting events taking place in the future.

Fairtrade protects farmers in the developing world against exploitation, providing them with decent wages and working conditions. We are attempting to use Fairtrade products wherever possible. Our Fairtrade policy tries to promote awareness in the school and the wider community, we are trying to incorporate this theme into lessons, whole school activities and events.

S4 Business Management Themed Calendar

The S4 Business management class have created a floral themed calendar based on the current S4 artwork. It is part of our course and helps us practice advertising, marketing and financing skills. We are selling them to pupils, parents, staff and to local businesses in the surrounding area.

We have 2 types of calendars A4 wall which are £5 each and CD case calendars which are £4 each. If you would like to place an order please contact the school on 01576 202626 or email Miss Gallingan at loffice682@ea.dumgal.sch.uk. All profits are going towards school funding for trips and enterprise activities.

Football - Under-13 Football

Dumfries High 2 v 6 Lockerbie Academy
Scorers: Sean Dunbar (2), Dean Smith (2), C Graham (1), K Jackson (1)
Man of the match; Kieran McCrudden

Lockerbie started brilliantly and were 3-0 ahead within 5 minutes with some excellent passing and shooting moves. Although some of the play became patchy Lockerbie continued to dominate and were only deprived of a bigger scoreline by the Dumfries goalkeeper who pulled off a long list of saves. Lockerbie’s shooting went a bit off but they still had a comfortable win overall. Robert McGowan and Kieran McCrudden made their debuts for the team.

Team: J McGinlay, C Graham, D Graham, K McCrudden, R McGowan, K Jackson, Z Caldwell, L Carrick, D Smith, S Dunbar, E Booth. Subs – L Scott, K Hogg, R Arthur, R Burgess (all used).

Football - Under-16 Football

Dumfries High 1 v Lockerbie Academy 1

Lockerbie played very well to gain a well deserved draw at Dumfries. In an even game Dumfries took the lead in the first half after a lapse of concentration by Lockerbie. Lockerbie ralleyed well in the second half and equalized with 5 minutes to go through Connor Murray. All players played very well. Man of the match: Kris Robson
