Eco Schools News

Can Recycling Competition

Last week the Eco school Committee started their can recycling competition to encourage pupils to put their cans into the appropriate can banks. Pupils were asked to write their names on the bottom of the cans before putting them into the bank. Last week Sam Rogers of first year was the winner and received his prize of Fair trade chocolate.

It was noted that each can recycled saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours!!

European Week of Languages

Last week was Lockerbie Academy’s European Week of Languages. This event which takes place Europe-wide aims to celebrate how important it is to learn languages – Mandarin, Spanish, Polish, French. Once you know how to learn one language you can use this skill to learn others throughout your life.

In Modern Languages classes last week pupils had the chance to take part in quizzes, competitions and projects which will help pupils to explore other languages. The whole school enjoyed a European-themed menu at the school canteen on Friday 26 September.

Each day last week a different member of staff or pupil showed off their language skills over the tannoy. Italian was Ms Duncan’s chosen language, French was Mrs Lewis’ language, Mr Banks spoke Gaelic, Lisa Dislich spoke German and pupil Emma Peck spoke Welsh.

Young Driver's Project

Last Wednesday almost 40 pupils from Lockerbie Academy, Moffat Academy and Langholm Academy participated in the second part of the Young Driver’s Project. This included some very interesting presentations on Safe Driving, alcohol and driving as well as a practice Theory Test and an alcohol Health quiz. At the end of the evening there was a presentation of certificates to all the students who participated. Our thanks again go to PC Ben Pybus and his colleagues Neil Graham, Keith Gunn and Mark Panzak and Gail and Rachael from SONAS, NHS. The support of Sean Marshall and his colleagues at Chapelcross was also greatly appreciated. Hannah Fleming won the prize of a Theory quiz book for scoring 29 out of 35 in the Theory Test, and the following pupils received certificates:
