Malawi African
Link Enterprise Group – Coffee Morning
What a great success the Malawi African Link Enterprise Group’s
coffee morning turned out to be. Over 150 supporters enjoyed endless
cups of coffee and home baking and the Lockerbie Academy students
were to the fore not only sixth year students manning stalls and
serving coffees but also lots of younger pupils helping behind
the scenes and also on many enterprise stalls. The entry fee,
competitions and amazing raffle with almost 100 prizes raised
a final total of £1020.
For such a link to be successful
it is vital there is a degree of equity in the link and, therefore,
the idea of an enterprise activity was so important with Lockerbie
Academy students benefitting as well as Thawale Primary School.
So far the Enterprise group have helped organise a sponsored walk
and cycle, raising over £3,000, as well as sending 300 pen
pal letters and 100 books. In future there will be a continuing
exchange in cultures, resources and a partnership with the Fair
Trade groups in the school. Thanks also to Mr Turner and other
staff and parents who helped support the event.
Scottish Youth Parliament
Elections – Ami Kirk, elected from Lockerbie Academy
Congratulations to Calum Harvey who polled over 120 votes in the
SYP elections and a special congratulations to Ami Kirk who polled
over 500 votes and was elected to serve as an MSYP.
Thanks to all who participated by campaigning or voting.
S5/S6 Talk on Blood Transfusion
Last Thursday the fifth year/sixth year students took part in
the annual Blood Transfusion Service assembly. Representing the
Blood Transfusion Service was Alison Maung, and local workers
– Monica Hammond and Lesley Fraser. Hopefully after such an interesting
presentation a large number of students will become blood donors.
Children in Need at Lockerbie Academy
This year there was a low key approach to supporting ‘Children
in Need’ as most of the S6 students were helping out with the
Malawi – African Link Coffee Morning.
However a number of younger
pupils dressed for the occasion, baked cakes and sold ‘hugs’.
The final amount collected was will be sent off to the “Children
in Need” Appeal.
Senior Mathematics
Challenge
Well done to the Lockerbie Academy Senior Maths team – Kathryn
Williamson, Jessie Liddon, Rebecca Donaldson and Megan Martin
– all sitting Higher Mathematics this year. Although the team
didn’t feature highly in the final results they enjoyed the event.
The only other state school was from Linlithgow Academy, along
with 17 Independent schools. Most of the other schools also comprised
of Advanced Higher maths students so perhaps next year there will
be more success.
The drama didn’t end at the
competition as Ms Manners and the team had terrible problems getting
home by train on Thursday night during the shocking storms which
disrupted rail travel – a heroic effort!
