National Poetry Day at Lockerbie
Academy
Thursday 8 October was National Poetry Day with this years theme
“Heroes and Heroines”. Staff and pupils selected their “Heroes
and Heroines” and a fantastic display appeared in the Assembly
Hall. At lunchtime there was a “balloon” debate in the school
library with three staff and three pupils trying to stay on the
balloon. Eventually Captain Jack Sparrow survived the vote to
stay.
National Junior Driving Championships
“I was lucky to be part of the Scottish Team that went to Eskrick
Park in Yorkshire to compete in the Junior Championships. There
are six classes depending on age and ability. I was in Class 1
age 10-12. We had three phases dressage, cones and marathon. I
won a lovely yellow rosette for coming third.” Alicia Fraser

“Wear it Pink” Day
On the last Friday before
the holidays the staff social committee organized a “Wear it Pink”
day to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Campaign.
The staff dressed in pink
and wore pink ribbons and then enjoyed a wonderful pink raffle
at interval.
£75 was raised for the Breast
Cancer Campaign by an enthusiastic group of S4 pupils who baked
and sold items to staff and fellow pupils. To fit in with the
recognised “pink” theme, fairy cakes and muffins were decorated
with pink icing and the charity logo was expertly piped on top.
Pink coconut ice, pink and white top-hats and chocolate truffles
with pink decorations were also sold. Grateful thanks are due
to this group who, instead of making a traditional Hallowe’en
cake, decided to hold this mini-enterprise event instead. This
made a grand total of £355.96 to the Breast Cancer Research
Campaign.
Jeans for Genes Day – 2nd October
Jeans for Genes Day was another successful non-uniform day in
the school raising £665.97 for Genetic Research, the S6
Charities Steps and MacMillan Cancer Research, and the School
Fund.
Hats from Anne Marie and Higher Art Students
Ms Duncan’s S5 Higher Art Students were treated to a special visit
from milliner and owner of the Anne Marie boutique in Lockerbie,
Marie Hill. Marie showed a range of beautiful hats and headpieces
from her collection and also demonstrated millinery techniques.
Students had the chance to discuss their ideas and of course try
on the hats.
