Lockerbie Academy
Sports Club Awards Ceremony
At this year’s Sport’s Club
Awards ceremony the guest of honour was Steven Sloan, former pupil
and midfield stalwart for Annan Athletic. Over 200 pupils attended
the awards ceremony and Mr Ferrie was master of ceremony assisted
by Ms Cook and Mr Dillon.
The Sports Club tries to encourage
participation and achievement and awards are given at five levels
from Level 1 for regular attendance at a club, to Level 5 which
indicates playing for the school, representing the Region and
captaining or going on to National Trials.
The first two sports outlined
were Girls Football and Hockey, with hockey being disappointing
with only four Regional teams, whilst the girl footballers had
a good run in the Scottish Cup and one player Emma Jackson reached
the late stages in the National Trials.
Ms Cook then produced a comprehensive
Report on the Inter House Games which ran successfully earlier
in the week.
The hockey and football matches
were played in reasonable weather at King Eddy’s park and the
primary school, resulting in Dryfe house leading the competition
after the first day’s play.
On Tuesday, Kirtle house provided
the main competition to Dryfe in the volleyball and basketball
matches, keeping the overall result fairly close to the end.
Final results:
Winners Dryfe 184 points
2nd Kirtle 152 points
3rd Milk 136 points
4th Annan 106 points
The badminton class had had
a successful season with great interest in S6 pupils and also
younger pupils. The regional tournament saw a clutch of medals
with Calum Tollick winning the Under-19 title for the second year
running. The rugby club had a mixed season being able to run both
Under-15 and Under-18 teams in the Scottish Cup, however they
achieved few wins. Thanks went to Mr Dinwoodie for his assistance
with the rugby club.
This year’s PE Performance
Awards went to:
Higher – Nathan Muir
Standard Grade – Jessie Liddon
In the football club 2008-09
has been a great season. The Under-18’s reached the 3rd round
of the Scottish Cup and finished 2nd in the Regional League. The
Under-16’s also had a determined season showing a very good effort
and the Under-13’s have so far won 13 out of 14 games, reached
the Regional Cup final, won the Coca Cola 7s Regional section
and have reached the quarter final of the Scottish Cup. Levi Carrick
has been selected for the South West SFA Regional Squad and hopefully
boys at all age groups will get into the Regional teams.
Special Awards were given
to:
Sports Leaders – Nathan Muir,
Grant Bryson, David Black, Jack Copeland and the girls Curling
team who won the Scottish School’s Curling championship:
Lockerbie Academy’s team of
Hannah Fleming, Kimberley Smith, Alice Spence and Kirsten McNay
won the Scottish Schools Finals for a record seventh time. Hannah
also followed in her brother, Gavin’s, victory in 1997 and her
own success as lead in Clare Hamilton’s team in 2006.
In the final Lockerbie Academy
beat Garnock Academy 7-3.
Lockerbie Academy 2, skipped
by Stuart Hardie, and including Lisa Jardine, Samantha Howatson
and Jamie Hardie gained good experience by coming in third in
their Round Robin league section.
The gymnastics had Regional
success with the team of Esme Green, Taylor Stewart, Mairi McCall
and Hannah McGregor coming 2nd in the Scottish Schools heats.
