Academy's 2008/09 CREATE Trophy Winners |
Scottish and Gaelic writer Aonghas MacNeacail spent three
weeks working with staff and students at the school in October
2006, preparing poetry and prose for the Regional Anthology
Out of my Mouth. The anthology features work from both staff
and students of Lockerbie Academy.
Aonghas’s residency stimulated an already growing interest
in Creative Writing among Lockerbie Academy students, and
in recognition of this it was decided to endow an annual
prize in Creative Writing. This is awarded to the student
in S5/6 who achieves the highest standard in creative writing.
This year the prize was judged by Julian Colton in April
2009 from a group of entries he described as being of a
very high standard. He picked out winner Kate Shenton’s
entry for ‘the multiple layers’ of theme and characterisation
in its opening chapter. Runner-up Amy Cochrane was commended
for her ‘ambitious, strong and detailed’ work. Julian also
praised Scott Irving who came third for ‘a brave story confronting
a bleak theme’. All three were congratulated for their ‘skilful
and disciplined’ writing.
