Death in the Trenches
John Dupre
All of them are thinking of me,
I can feel it.
I see it in their eyes.
None of them can see me
Yet all of them know I am near.
I walk among them
Yet I do no work –
They do it for me.
They create my presence.
I supervise my work being done by them.
Both sides fear me –
I take no side.
I take them when they fall
Anywhere else they resist my presence,
But here they invite me.
They dig their own graves,
They call them trenches.
They don’t even know that all it does
Is make my job easier.
I am coming,
Coming for all of them.
