Can Cook Will Cook Competition
The final of this competition took place last week in the Home
Economics Department. Working in pairs, S2 pupils had to produce
a 2 course meal within 1 hour. The choice of main ingredients
was limited to chicken, mince or salmon and this had to be accompanied
by pasta, rice or noodles. As the school is a Fair Trade school,
as many of the ingredients as possible were of Fair Trade origin.
Mrs Morag Cuthbertson, chef at the local Hightae Inn, had the
unenviable task of judging the competition. The standard of cooking
was excellent and the presentation of the dishes was impressive.Winners
were –
1st Hannah McGregor (Dryfe) and Sophie Story (Annan)
2nd Tom Henderson and Adam Wilson (both Annan)
3rd Aidan Agnew (Annan) and Ellen Muir (Dryfe)
The winning dishes included Chilli con Carne, Spicy Meatballs
with a Tomato and Basil Sauce, Thai Chicken Curry, Chocolate Fudge
Cake, Strawberry Sponge Rounds and Strawberry Shortcake.
National No Smoking Day
Last Wednesday was No Smoking Day. 3H (Mrs Morton’s Reg. Class)
put up a display on the notice board in the dining room. Please
read what it says.
If you already are a smoker, please give it up. The notice board
will tell you why you should stop this bad habit. Be a successful
learner and give up smoking.
If you have not already started smoking, please do not start.
The display will give you reasons why it would be silly to start
smoking.
If you know someone who smokes, be a responsible citizen and try
to get them to stop.
Sports News/Athletics
Danielle Beattie has been selected to represent Scotland at the
Virgin London Mini Marathon on 25 April. This selection comes
after a good result at the Scottish Cross Country Championships
in Falkirk where she finished 3rd (2nd Scottish girl, as winner
was from Preston). Danielle is the first selected member of the
group of 6 girls in 13/14 age group and this is her first time
representing Scotland.
Danielle was also running for the “West of Scotland” team at the
UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Birmingham on
Saturday 13 March.
Calum Main (S5) – Scottish National Table Tennis Championships
Calum played in both Junior
and Senior events at the Scottish National Table Tennis Championships
held in Glasgow on 6/7 March. On Saturday Calum competed in the
senior events; the Mens Singles and Mens Doubles. (Calum is nearly
17 years old). He played scintillating table tennis, knocked out
both the No6 and No8 seeded men to earn a quarterfinal place to
meet Craig Howeison the Mens No.2 seed. Calum lost to Craig in
the quarterfinal but Craig had to play exceptional table tennis
to beat Calum 3-1.
Similarly Calum and his partner Scott Barton also a junior, caused
upset after upset to finally meet the Scottish No1 men’s seed
in the Doubles semi final. They were unfortunate to lose the semi
pushing the No1 seeds to 5 sets losing 3-2.
However, Calum's main event
took place on the 7 March - the Junior competitions. Calum and
Scott (No1 seeds) eased into the Junior Boys final with relative
ease, but the No2 seeds gave them heavy resistance in the final,
however they overcame them to become Scottish Junior Doubles Champions.
However, the blue ribbon event on the Sunday was undoubtedly the
Junior Boys singles. Calum eased into the semi finals as the No2
seed, but was tested in a wonderful 5 set match against the Drumchapel
Junior Nathan Courtney. This set up the expected final of Sean
Doherty the No1 seed and Calum No2 seed. What a final, advantage
swinging between them throughout the match it was a great 5 set
final, but Calum's consistency and technique overcame Sean and
he became National Junior Champion with a 3-2 win.
The icing on the cake came
during the presentation ceremony with Calum awarded player of
the season for his professional approach to his sport both in
match play and training, and showing fairplay at all times.
