Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade fortnight
took place from the 23 February – 8 March, the school contributed
with many activities through the two weeks including a banana
themed yellow non-uniform day. We aim to become a Fairtrade school
and in doing this we raised £375. This money will be split
between our 3 chosen charities; Marie Curie, Headway house and
the Lorna Young foundation.
We chose Marie Curie Cancer
Care in commemoration of members of staff, Rab Kerr and Fiona
Dirom, who passed away recently. Marie Curie nurses give direct
nursing care to patients in the community who are seriously ill
with cancer, free of charge. They provide expert physical care
for the patient as well as emotional support for the patient as
well as emotional support for the patient and the patient’s family.
Shona Gibson came to collect the cheque on behalf of Marie Curie
Cancer Care.
The pupils’ choice of charity
was the local charity Headway house, from Dumfries. Thanks to
the vision and hard work of a group of carers 30 years ago, brain
injury survivors today know they are not alone. From humble beginnings,
Headway - the brain injury association has developed into a national
organisation providing care and support to thousands of people
across the UK.
The Lorna Young Foundation
was chosen as a charity to remember the life of Lorna Young an
ex pupil at Lockerbie Academy who lost her life at the age of
44. During her life she had fought for Fairtrade to become better
known, so the school thought this would be an appropriate charity
for us to donate to. Bob and Daisy Young, Lorna’s parents came
to receive the cheque on behalf of the Lorna Young Foundation.

Stranraer Academy 7 v 3 Lockerbie Academy
Scorer:Connor Graham (3)
Lockerbie who were already
short of some key midfielders lost Levi Carrick early in the match
with a serious injury. The team showed great spirit with very
good performances from Sean Dunbar, Kieron McCrudden, Connor Graham
and Robbie Carter. Unfortunately Stranraer proved too strong on
the day.
Mathematics Team Challenge
On Monday the 23rd
of March, four Lockerbie Academy students went to the Richard
Rose Morton Academy in Carlisle, where twelve schools were participating
in an annul Maths Challenge. The members of our team were Chris
Gray (S2), Danielle Beattie (S2), William Beech (S1) and Rebekah
Hargreaves (S1). When we arrived we discovered it was an IQ test
just to find the venue with signs telling us to go here there
and everywhere. We made it to the hall to find only a couple of
teams had arrived. We were assigned to a table and started on
our starter question. In the first round we did really well we
split the paper and each completed two questions. We were a good
team as we checked over each others answers and worked together
on the more difficult questions. We didn’t do as well in the second
round which relied on getting the previous question correct. One
slip and the marks were lost. There were a total of four rounds.
The favourite round for all of us was the relay race. We split
our team into two and when we got a question right we were allowed
to deliver the next question to the rest of the team at the other
end of the room. One of the trickiest questions was about Pythagoras
theorem which S1 had yet to cover in their course. For those with
a maths mind we were the median team (and above St Joseph's College).
We would like to express our thanks to Mrs Dickson for taking
us and believing we would represent the school well. Thanks to
ATI and Mr Smith driving us there and back.
SAGT Worldwise Quiz
Lockerbie Academy’s
quiz team of Nathan Moloney, Jessie Liddon and Peter Gardiner
took part in the National Finals last week and although they didn’t
challenge for the top positions, the team can be proud of their
preparations for the final – the first time a Lockerbie team has
reached this stage.
