Over £700
was raised for various charities by the Fairtrade non-uniform,
‘wear something yellow’, day.
Red Nose Day
Although this year
the school decided not to sell red noses as local shops had taken
on that role, over £550 was raised through a number of local
events. The big ‘do something funny for money’ success was the
shaving off of Alistair Inglis’ golden locks. The main sponsor
Dora Lewis had the fun of shaving Alistair bald. Six first year
pupils Tarryn Kempson-Hopkins, Sarah Story, Bethany Nelson, Shelley
Patterson, Chloe McWhirter and Kimberley McCrorie wore their pyjamas
and dressing gowns throughout the day raising over £200;
and face painting took place at lunchtime.
Sports News
Curling
Lockerbie Academy’s team
of Hannah Fleming, Kimberley Smith, Alice Spence and Kirsten McNay
won the Scottish Schools Finals for a record seventh time. Hannah
also followed in her brother Gavin’s victory in 1997 and her own
success as lead in Clare Hamilton’s team in 2006. This is only
the second time an all girls team has won the competition.
In the final Lockerbie Academy
beat Garnock Academy 7-3.
A steal of two at
the fourth end and a steal of another one at fifth put Hannah
in a strong position. Garnock took one at the sixth. A tap back
round a guard at the seventh end gave Hannah a three and game.
The team had a mixed start
in the Round Robin league, drawing 10-10 against Stewart-Melvilles,
winning 8-4 against Garnock and Douglas Ewart but losing 6-5 against
Bell Baxter. In the final ‘must win’ match they defeated Kelvinside
Academy 6-4.
Lockerbie hit top form from
then on defeating previously undefeated Hamilton Grammar 5-3,
and in the semis defeating Stranraer Academy 8-3 to reach the
final. An outstanding result for the girls who have had a fantastic
season.
Lockerbie Academy 2, skipped by Stuart Hardie, and including Lisa
Jardine, Samantha Howatson and Jamie Hardie gained good experience
by coming third in their Round Robin league section.
Under-13 Football – League
Match
Annan Academy 0 v 6 Lockerbie
Academy
Scorers: Ed Booth (2), Sean Dunbar, Dean Smith, Robbie Collins,
Connor Graham.
Man of the match: Dean Smith, Levi Carrick
In difficult playing conditions
Lockerbie took the game to Annan but after a number of good chances
failing to hit the target Dean Smith broke the deadlock with an
excellent strike. Lockerbie continued to win most of the battles
and finished the game with a cracking fourth goal after a quick
breakaway – a forty yard pass from Dean Smith was flicked on by
Sean Dunbar and Ed Booth struck a left foot pass beyond the diving
Annan goalkeeper.
National Science and Engineering
Week at Lockerbie Academy
National Science
and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten day celebration of science,
engineering and technology which runs from the 6-15 March 2009.
Last year around 1.4 million people attended over 3,5000 events
across the UK! At Lockerbie Academy last year we ran the successful
rocket competition (which if you remember the contractors won).
We also participated in the Regional Energy Competition, from
which has stemmed the new S2 Physics Course. This year we have
also been successful in obtaining a grant towards the cost of
an event. Our event was a joint event with Community Development
and Learning and we are working with the young people in S1 and
S2 involved in the Dynamic Youth Awards. These students made the
posters and tickets and made the tray bakes on Wednesday night.
This year Phil Lavery from
DIGITAL LEARNING came to give a 3D space show to all S2 pupils.
The 3D show was set up on the stage last Thursday.
There was then an opportunity
for other people to watch the show and have a coffee and tea afterwards
from 4 pm until 5 pm and a show from 5 pm until 6 pm.

S6 - Planters
Johnny Bunting of
S6 has been using his skills to produce items for our associated
primary schools. Having achieved Practical Craft Skills at Intermediate
2 level in S5 he returned to the workshops in S6 to apply what
he had learned to further projects. He built a number of picnic
tables for Lockerbie Primary, them moved on to build planters
for Lochmaben Primary.
These consist of a timber box with plastic crates inserted and
supported on plastic pipes. Since they resemble railway wagons
he has converted one to look like an engine. We are sure they
will go down well with the nursery group in particular.
