from Lockerbie Academy - Thursday 12 March 2009
Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade Fortnight
culminated last Friday with a talk from Cornelius Lynch who is
a Fairtrade farmer from the Windward Islands. The non-uniform
day had a yellow theme and many students took a chance to wear
yellow, occasionally using an old football away strip! Mrs Beck
produced some amazing banana soup and banoffie pie and overall
it was clear Lockerbie Academy was truly becoming a Fairtrade
School.
Throughout the fortnight different pupils read out Fairtrade thoughts
over the school tannoy. One example read by Ann-Marie Mooney last
Thursday was as follows:
“Tea is a very popular drink in Scotland!
How many of us though, have stopped and thought of the poor people
who pick the leaves of the tea plant? What are their lives like?
How many hours a day do they have to work? What are their working
conditions like?
Fairtrade supports a better life for tea workers by guaranteeing
wages which do not fall below a certain level, freedom to join
a trade union, and involvement in the running of the business.
There are over 70 Fairtrade tea estates across Asia, Africa and
Latin America”.
Tom McMinn produced a Fairtrade Quiz of 19 questions including:
“Which supermarkets stock only Fairtrade bananas?
a. Co-operative and Sainsbury’s
b. Marks & Spencer and Waitrose
c. Lidl and Tesco
d. Sainsbury’s and Waitrose”

Scottish Cup – Fourth Round
Lockerbie Academy 6 v
1 St Andrews & St Brides (EK)
Scorers: Sean Dunbar (3), Dean Smith (3)
Man of the Match: Danny Graham, Dean Smith, Kieron McCrudden
Well done to the young Lockerbie
team who took on another team from the Central Belt and had an
emphatic win. In the first half Lockerbie had most of the pressure
and many near misses – however eventually after an excellent run
by Luke Hammond, Sean Dunbar scored from close range. Lockerbie
started strongly in the second half and moved two ahead with a
Dean Smith breakaway. In very heavy conditions St Brides continued
to work hard and after a good spell pinched a goal back. This
seemed to rouse Lockerbie Academy who got stronger as the game
went on and ran out comfortable winners 6-1.
Team: Jordan McGinlay, Connor
Graham, Kieron McCrudden, Danny Graham (c), Kyron Jackson, Zak

Milk House Assembly : Fairtrade, Recycling and Respect
At the Milk House
assembly last Thursday the themes of Fairtrade, Recycling and
Respect were to the fore. The Milk pupils were organized in groups
and made handbags and carrier bags made out of newspaper and sellotape
as well as handles made from plarn (plastic bags cut in strips
and woven into yarn).
During the event the pupils
also completed a message board with various messages spelling
out the word ‘respect’.
