Under-13
National Shield Final sponsored by Bank of Scotland
Lockerbie Academy’s Under-13 team
made school history last Thursday by becoming the first Regional
team to win the Under-13 Scottish National Shield. At Toryglen
Sports Arena both Lockerbie Academy and North Berwick High were
well supported by parents, friends, staff and pupils who created
an electric atmosphere.

Lockerbie made a positive start and Sean Dunbar hit two
shots inches past the post and Dean Smith had another near
miss. However North Berwick’s star player, Hamish Law whipped
in an excellent corner which was headed in to given them
an early lead. Lockerbie responded immediately with sweeping
passing movements from wing to wing using the full width
of the park and Dean Smith slammed the ball home from 15
yards to equalize. Lockerbie were now on top and Sean Dunbar
was put through one on one with the goal keeper who brought
him down. Levi Carrick calmly buried the penalty. More chances
were created but half time came with Lockerbie 2-1 ahead.

In the second half, Lockerbie Academy started very well
and Luke Hammond headed in from a powerful Kieron McCrudden
header. Luke almost added two more when the North Berwick
goalie tipped a shot onto the bar and then held a clever
chip.
Suddenly the game changed
when North Berwick equalized with two quick goals against
the run of play. However Lockerbie re-grouped and with 15
minutes to go, Levi Carrick played a one-two with Sean Dunbar,
beat 3 defenders and rolled the ball into the net. Lockerbie’s
spirits rose, as North Berwick wilted and Levi dribbled
into the box and cut the ball back to Sean who tapped in
an easy chance. With tails up, Lockerbie began to dominate
with Luke finding Conor Graham, Bob McGowan and Zak Caldwell
consistently in wide attacking positions. As Kieron McCrudden
held a tight position in midfield, Luke bombed forward and
scored two more terrific goals.

It was all over and the referee blew for full time to spark
off wild celebrations by the players matched easily by the
fans on the stand.
|
| It
was left to Danny Graham to lift the trophy to the backdrop
of a huge cheer of delight and relief.
A huge thanks again to our brilliant supporters – parents,
pupils and staff; the coaching team; Annan Athletic for
training facilities; Houston for the buses (including the
replacements); the Scottish Schools Football Association
and the sponsors the Bank of Scotland.
Sarah Cran,
Head of Sponsorship for the Bank of Scotland commented:
“I would like to congratulate Lockerbie Academy on their
victory. It is a fantastic achievement to reach the final
of a national competition and both teams should feel proud
of their outstanding efforts. Bank of Scotland is proud
of its long-standing partnership with the Scottish Schools
FA, now in its 27th year and the U13 Shield is just one
of many School competitions we support.
Well done Lockerbie Academy – champions of Scotland!
