News from Lockerbie Academy - Thursday 5 June 2008

New Timetable starts at the Academy

Last Monday the school moved forward with its new timetable for 2008-2009. This means students are following their new timetable for the next four weeks. On Monday 23 June, the new S1 will arrive for their induction week and they, too, will be following their new timetable and meeting all of their new teachers.

Dougie MacLean Masterclass and Concert

Scottish singer/songwriter Dougie Maclean visited the school last week. He performed a masterclass with some music students, explaining his songwriting techniques and also confessing that he couldn’t read a note of music. However, with over 30 CD’s to his credit and international acclaim for ‘Caledonia’ and the theme music for ‘The last of the Mohicans’, Dougie who has been playing instruments from an early age demonstrated what a prodigious talent he has. The hour long class finished off with an impromptu version of ‘Caledonia’ involving staff and students.

Nearly 200 people were in the Assembly Hall for the evening concert where Dougie performed many of his well known repertoire of songs finishing with an encore of ‘Green grow the rashes’. An American family who had last seen Dougie perform in Orkney had made a special detour on their UK holiday to hear him in Lockerbie. The two hour concert was over all too soon for the audience and many will already be booking tickets for the forthcoming Perthshire Amber event in Autumn.

New Beginnings

The school has received word back from New Beginnings which you will remember was the group of children from Uganda who visited the school recently.

The group wanted to thank the school for their hospitality and let us know that their visit raised sponsorship for another 28 pupils to visit Scotland in the near future.

Sports Day at Lockerbie Academy

School Sports took place at King Edward Park on Tuesday 27 May. Unfortunately, weather conditions were not conducive to the whole school attending to spectate but the competitors participated keenly non-the-less, with the event being successfully completed in cold but dry weather. The PE staff appreciated the assistance of colleagues who helped officiate and record results.

With the sports running off-campus on a 300m track, the 400m and 800m events became 300m and 600m, and the relays were 3 x 100m instead of 4 x 100m. This made for an interesting event this year, which was enthusiastically supported by the pupils.

Final Results:

S1 Girls Champion - Danielle Beattie
S1 Boys Champion - Lee Dixon

S2 Girls Champion - Emma Jackson
S2 Boys Champion - Daniel Nordon/Cameron Dunn

S3 Girls Champion - Jessie Liddon
S3 Boys Champion - Cameron Robb

House Champions – Dryfe
