Fitness
Day for Girls - Tuesday 20 January
As part of a government
initiative to promote more female participation in sport and leisure
activities the senior girls at the Academy have been taking part
in an array of fitness events, most of which they will be experiencing
for the first time.
The funding for
all this has come from the ‘Awards for All’ lottery scheme and
was sourced by Mrs Esther Armstrong, PE teacher at the Academy.
The sum of £8,960 was procured and used to buy equipment
such as spinning bikes, boxercise gloves and pads, fitballs and
exercise mats. Specialised tutors in each of these activities
taught all the sessions:
Mike Mc Ewen, Annandale and
Eskdale Leisure Trust - spinning
Tina Lockhart, Active Schools - fitball
Jacqui Byers, Active Schools - boxercise
Rachel Bradley - dance

Kevin Somerville,
Secondary Active Schools Co-ordinator, supported on the day and
assisted in the ordering of equipment and liaising with the tutors.
The girls had a wonderful
day and the school proposes to introduce most of these activities
into the PE curriculum in future. The school is very grateful
to all those who helped out with the event and hope that the young
ladies are enthused and encouraged to be more active and healthy
both during their school career and in future post-school years.
Stock
Market Challenge
On Thursday 22 January
five S3 Business Management pupils travelled to Glasgow
to take part in the 2009 Stock Market Challenge Event.
The event, which was sponsored by Careers Scotland and
BNP Paribas Securities Services, gave the pupils an opportunity
to take on the role of stockbrokers buying and selling
shares and foreign exchange on a live trading floor in
competition with 24 other schools. All five pupils did
remarkably well, finishing at the end of trading with
a portfolio worth £25,200. So well done to the Academy
team members; Katie Armstrong, Stephanie Sloan, James
Murray, Dale Houstin and Jack Edens!

Books for Schools
We are collecting
‘Books for Schools’ tokens from the Times and the Sunday Times.
If you have any of these tokens please ask you child to hand
them into the school library. As always, your support is very
much appreciated.
S1 Reading Awards
Last Wednesday
all first year English classes attended Reading Awards. This
scheme tries to encourage younger pupils to read. Over 40 pupils
were presented with Bronze Awards for reading five books with
five tasks. One pupil, Rebekah Hargreaves who is a very enthusiastic
reader received the Silver and Gold Awards for reading 10 books
with additional reviews. Hopefully even more pupils will achieve
Reading Awards at Bronze level or better in the near future.
Reading is supported in the school with a very widespread Paired
Reading scheme and the Corrective Reading programme.
Burns Assembly
On Thursday last
week the schools traditional S1/2 Burns Assembly honoured the
year of Homecoming and the 250th Anniversary of the birth of
Robert Burns.
The Advanced Higher Drama
Class – Liam Scott, Kate Anderson, Jack Matthews and Craig Stoddart
– presented the Assembly after an introduction from Mr Herbert
and piping by Chris Gray. Next up was Kathleen Kelly who sang
a Burns Song and then after this the format of a Burns Supper
was explained. Mr Rae with Mrs Beck providing the haggis and
Chris Gray piping again gave The Address to the Haggis. The
Fiddle Club then gave a selection of Burns Tunes and MsTaylor
recited “To a Mouse” before the audience joined hands to sing
“Auld Lang Syne”.
Burns Light on Burns
Night
Continuing the
theme of celebrating Burns night, Ms Rogerson organized a group
of students to make lanterns and join the lantern procession
winding through the historic heart of Dumfries to meet at the
Whitesands and watch the entertainment and spectacular wicker
sculpture of Tam O’Shanter being set alight.
Visit from the Moderator
of the General Assembly
The school was
pleased to welcome the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt
Rev David Lunan, his wife Maggie and the School Chaplain Rev.
Sandy Stoddart for a short visit to the school last Thursday
morning.

Under-13 Football League
Lockerbie Academy 9 v 0 Annan Academy
Goal scorers: Sean Dunbar (3), Eddie Booth (3), Dean Smith (2),
Robbie Collins.
Man of the match : Luke Hammond
Although the length of the match
was shortened as only one pitch was available, Lockerbie had
plenty of time to show they were in top form. Annan fought hard
but Lockerbie passed the ball well and the midfield of Zak Caldwell,
Luke Hammond, Levi Carrick and Dean Smith provided a constant
supply of chances for Sean Dunbar and Ed Booth. Most of the
chances were finished clinically and all the subs cam on and
performed well. Well done to Ross Burgess who started his first
match and Robbie Collins who scored his first goal for the school.
