Malawi African Link Art Competition
As part of the Malawi
African Link an art Competition was organised by Ms Duncan. Over
50 pupils entered and the standard was excellent. The final results
were:
FIRST - Ashley Candler
SECOND - Callum Harvey
THIRD - Mhairi Burnett
Highly Commended - Gabriella Woolley and Ava Thomson
The finished pieces will now be used as a basis for a large mural
which hopefully can be exhibited at the New School.
Scottish Secondary Schools, Under 16 Boys Sabre, Individual Fencing
Championships
Congratulations go to Andrew Williamson, S3 who took
part in the above competition at the beginning of February and
won the Championship class amidst strong competition.
Andrew won all his 8 poule fights, with only one fencer gaining
3 points off him. He was seeded Number 1 after the poules. He
was undefeated from start to finish.
The manner of his win was exceptional despite presently recovering
from a knee dislocation injury and not fencing competitively since
early December 2009. This was the very best win of his fencing
career to date. Well done Andrew.
Fairtrade Fortnight
Lockerbie Academy became the first Fairtrade School in the Region
in January 2010. Last Monday Fairtrade Fortnight started in the
school with a number of events planned.
Firstly on Monday past there was a Fairtrade Fortnight Non-uniform
day with the theme of Fairtrade being blue and green. The Malawi
Rice Challenge was launched – where the school is trying to sell
90kgs of Kilombero Rice from Malawi. This will raise £230
– which will allow one secondary pupil to be educated in Malawi
for one year.
Other events will include, Thought for the Day, with Fairtrade
thoughts tannoyed every morning, The Big Swap and the Big Bru
as well as sampling sessions for tea etc. There will also be “Chocolate
Days” organised by the Fairtrade Tuck Shop, and lessons based
around various web links.
On Friday Karishnam Sainathan from Bangalore will be speaking
about managing an organic Fairtrade cotton project in their states
in South India.
Faraday Engineering Challenge
A heat of the prestigious nationwide Faraday Engineering Challenge
was held recently at Lockerbie Academy. Teams from five schools
around Dumfries and Galloway competed in an event designed to
test the pupils’ problem solving skills in engineering. The teams
of six had to design a machine that would take as much water as
possible out of a tank to simulate what would happen in a real
life flood. The pupils had to design and manufacture the machine
themselves under the watchful eyes of engineers from IET Faraday.
After a day of excellent competition St Josephs College came first
with Lockerbie Academy and Maxwelltown High School in equal second
place. The Lockerbie Academy team was Christopher Shearman, Morven
Beattie, Rhona Park, Adam Gilmour, Harvey Tollick and Holly Hunter.
