SAGT World
Wise Quiz
Last Friday
Miss Harley took six pupils up to Lanark Grammar School to take
part in the SAGT World Wise Quiz. This is an annual quiz where
teams of three (one 2nd year, one 3rd year and one 4th year) go
head to head, testing their Geography knowledge.
Once we had arrived at the school we were taken to the Geography
department and given seats in the classroom and time to have our
lunch. Once the other 6 teams had arrived just after 1pm the quiz
started. There were 8 teams in total and we all took part in the
‘local heats’. The heats were split into 6 rounds each with different
formats. In the first round we were given an OS map and had to
follow a route filling in missing features and grid references.
The next few rounds ranged from naming colours of the world to
a case study of New Zealand. Soon enough the heats were finished
and the results announced. Four teams out of the eight got through
to the ‘local finals’. Unfortunately Miss Harley’s team of Jessica
Campbell, Johnny Irvine and Harriet Fallows didn’t get through
but Mrs Mitchell’s team of me, Peter Gardiner and Nathan Moloney
did. The final was made up of four rounds. They consisted of watching
a video clip on the world’s tallest structures and answering questions
on it, then doing various timed questions on general geography,
odd-one-out and deciphering altered geographical images. None
of us thought we had done particularly well thinking we typically
got the hardest questions but luckily our hard work revising previously
paid off and we qualified for the finals which will be held on
13 March. Well done everyone and my team had better get revising
again!

Scottish Shield Under-13 (Boys) - 3rd Round
Stranraer Academy 0 v 5 Lockerbie Academy
Goals: Luke Hammond (3), Dean Smith (2)
Man of the match: Kyron Jackson
An excellent effort by Lockerbie’s youngest team – notably all
first year players. After the two hour bus journey the team prepared
well pre-match and started quickly with Luke Hammond scoring two
opportunistic goals. Despite steady pressure leading to many corners
and half-chances Stranraer kept the score to 2-0, but rarely threatened
Lockerbie’s well organized defence.
The second half started dramatically when straight from the pre-planned
kick off Luke Hammond knocked a long ball to Dean Smith – one
touch and the ball nestled in the net. Instead of fighting back,
Stranraer were pinned back for the next 20 minutes and two more
goals came during this spell.
Only in the last 10 minutes did Stranraer press as Lockerbie tired
and all the substitutes came on.
A smashing victory for Lockerbie with a great team performance
and another clean sheet.
Scottish Shield Under-15 (Girls) – 3rd Round
The U15 girl footballers played well on Thursday afternoon
against St Aidans of Wishaw. Unfortunately the opposition were
extremely skilled and very fast. Lockerbie Academy lost, however
they scored two goals – one by Hope Chadwick and one by Alice
Williams. The players were a credit to Lockerbie Academy. Well
done!
