Sports News
Scottish Cup – Under 13 Boys Second Round
Lockerbie Academy 4 – Calder Glen High (East Kilbride) 2
Scorers – Dean Smith, Ed Booth, Sean Dunbar
Top performers – Luke Hammond, Kieron McCrudden, Sean Dunbar
In appalling conditions Lockerbie hosted Calder Glen one of
the largest schools in South Lanarkshire. After 10 minutes it
became clear that Lockerbie could dominate midfield and had
pace to burn up front. After 15 minutes, Lockerbie had a seven
man move which finished with Dean Smith heading into the corner
of the net. Calder Glen were unlucky not to equalise just before
Lockerbie went 2 ahead right on half time.
The second half changed with the big, strong Calder Glen having
pressure but Lockerbie were very dangerous on the break before
Sean Dunbar scored after a goalmouth scramble. After Calder
Glen pulled one back, Lockerbie went straight up the park with
two passes and Edward Booth tapped in the shot which came off
the post.
Although Calder Glen had one more goal Lockerbie held out easily
and might have scored more than four goals.
Scottish Cup – Under
15 Girls Third Round
Congratulations to the U15
Girl footballers who won 6 – 1 against Marr College, Troon before
the holidays. The whole team played extremely well with Ellen
Muir, Zoe Forlow and Hope Chadwick scoring 1 goal each, Emma
Jackson who played right midfield scored 3 goals. Well done
to everyone – excellent teamwork.
Radio Programme by Lockerbie
Academy Students - Determined to Broadcast
As Lockerbie Students we were given the opportunity to help
produce a radio program for West Sound. The program we were
to produce would be on the sensitive subject of the Lockerbie
Air Disaster of December 21st 1988. We instantly jumped at this
opportunity to help raise the awareness of pupils of an event
which helped mould the community we live in.
We started by thinking up questions to ask pupils and teachers
about the delicate subject of the disaster. After the appropriate
questions had been chosen, we set about choosing pupils and
staff to interview.
Despite the research we had done prior to the interviews, we
were still amazed and shocked by the responses of some of the
staff present at the time of the bombing. We came to realise
that 20 years on, the staff were still affected by the disaster
as they had not forgotten and the images remained vivid. Not
only did the teacher’s responses surprise us but so did the
lack of awareness of the pupils. The fact that the pupils knew
so little about the disaster disappointed us somewhat, yet it
was understandable considering that they were not born at the
time.
Overall, we found that the project was a valuable experience
which helped put us in the position of those who were affected
by the disaster. The research we had carried out beforehand
informed us about the physical damage done to the area but the
interviews showed us that the greatest damage done was the emotional
turmoil for those left to cope with the aftermath. However most
importantly, we learned that even though the disaster is not
part of their day to day routine, it must not be forgotten.

Library News
Approximately once a term, pupils in S1 and S2 are issued with
‘School Link’ booklets. These contain a wide selection of books
at greatly reduced prices. The idea is that if anyone wants
to buy books, they can bring the order form and a cheque to
the library and the orders are sent away from here. That way
it is possible to avoid having to pay postage and packaging
costs. The library gets 10% of the total amount of the sales
to spend on future orders. ‘School Link’ now has a website at
www.schoollink.co.uk
where anyone can order books at anytime throughout the year.
Lockerbie Academy will be awarded 10% of any sales made on-line.
All you have to do is register with the site and then choose
Lockerbie Academy as the school you want to receive your commission.
In the current economic climate it is even more important to
make the budget go as far as possible and, as they say in a
well known supermarket, ‘Every Little Helps!”
Morrison Vouchers
Thank you to all those who
have handed these in. Last Monday these vouchers were sent off.
We have enough to get a water butt to connect to the drainpipe.
This will be a useful source of water for our small garden.
