News from Lockerbie Academy - Thursday 24 August 2009

Staffing

We are pleased to welcome the following members of staff to the Academy: Mrs R Bowker (Biology), Mrs C Goodwin (Chemistry), Miss P Hamilton (English), Mr M Holmes (Technical), Mr S Marcantonio (Geography) and Mr D Sharp (PE). We have also said goodbye to Ms D Barton (Biology) who has been promoted to Principal Teacher (Pupil Support) at Dumfries Academy, Mr L Foss who has been seconded to the post of Education Support Officer (Estate Management) and Ms P Taylor (English) who has left us.

Three long serving members of staff retired this summer, Mr J Rae, Biology (38 years), Mr K McCord, Chemistry (31 years) and Mrs M Fyfe, Support for Learning (11 years). We wish them long and happy retirements.

School Photographs

Local photographer, Angus Leigh, will be in school on Friday 28 August 2009 to take individual photographs of S1, S3 and S5 pupils. Full school uniform must be worn and parents are reminded that they are under no obligation to purchase the final product. A group photograph of S6 will also be taken and family groups can be requested. Mr Leigh operates an annual rolling programme of year group photographs to ensure that each child has the opportunity to purchase a photograph every two years.

Eco School Elections

Eco-School Committee

Lockerbie Academy has been working on the Eco-schools programme for many years and has achieved Bronze and Silver level. We are now working on the top level which will allow us to achieve a Green Flag.

Every school impacts on its environment, from the moment that it is built with its running costs, its school transport system, its use of paper etc.

Using the Eco-schools programme enables each school to make sure that it organizes itself in a way that minimises its impact on the environment.

Details of the Eco School Programme:

Our present committee has been busy this year working on can recycling, paper recycling, light code, litter, school transport survey. They have put up a progress report on the Eco- schools noticeboard on the 1st floor of A Block.

The new committee, which for the ‘Green flag’ level, must also include pupils (from all year groups) was elected by the whole school.

Election of Our New Committee

We have now arranged for the next Lockerbie-Academy eco-committee who will take the eco-school ideas forward for the next session 2009/10.

The present committee has planned the process to elect this ‘ new’ committee.

Election Process

each register class (year S2-S6) put forward two pupils who are interested in eco-school issues
each pupil/candidate was encouraged to make up a poster to inform voters of their ideas for the eco-school committee
each year group then had an election to choose people to represent their year group on the committee
The following students were successfully elected:

S6 Scott Irving   S3 Aimee Patterson
  Alison Donaldson     Logan Creighton
  Emma Carson     Amber Murray

S5 Kathleen Kelly   S2 Matthew Wilson
  Gwen Dupre     Katie McCutcheon
  Kate Jackson     Tammy Maxwell
        Lauren Moffat
S4 Peter Gardiner     Aiden Agnew
  John Cartner     Dennan Smith
  Lauran Evans

Sports News

Football

After Lockerbie Academy’s best ever school season when the Under-13’s won the Scottish Cup and local league and cup double the new season starts with trials for the new Under-13 and Under-14 teams. To conclude last season’s success a framed, signed jersey from the final was presented to captain Danny Graham and Luke Hammond. Unfortunately this season Luke cannot play for the school team as he has signed for Glasgow Rangers FC. We wish him all the best as his career progresses but the good news is that Luke is staying on as the team mascot!!
