Lockerbie Academy Sports
Club Awards 2009-2010
Mr Ferrie welcomed staff and pupils to the twelfth Annual Sports
Awards. The Sports Club was set up to encourage participation
and strive for high achievement. It was noted that former pupils
had received international honours e.g. Nick de Luca – rugby;
David Murdoch, Euan Byers, Craig Wilson and Lorna Vevers – curling.
The guest of honour was Mr Martin Holmes from the school’s ICT/Technical
Faculty who is a renowned rower. His achievements included:
British Champion at 18, attended his first Commonwealth Games
aged 24 in 1986 after which he was ranked 10th in the world. He
won a bronze at 1994 Commonwealth Games. In 1999 he went one better
and won a Silver in the doubles at the Commonwealth. In 2005 he
picked up the last of the 25 Scottish caps earned over a 28 year
period. He has been a Scotland Team Captain, Scotland Coach and
Scotland Selector.
The awards continued with pupils receiving their certificates
at Levels 1 to 5 for rugby union, hockey, sailing, gymnastics,
fishing, football, badminton, curling and cheerleading.
The annual Interhouse Games Competition took place earlier in
the week with a slight change to the format of the outdoor games.
Due this winter’s poor weather we decided to hold the football
on the MUGA for boys only and the hockey in the games hall for
girls only, with no crossover girls football and boys hockey due
to being at different venues. This proved a successful change
for this year only. The indoor games, volleyball and basketball,
ran as per usual arrangements.
Senior Sports Captains did well to organise full teams for most
of the matches, resulting in one of the closest competitions we
have had for many years.
At the end of the outdoor day, Milk House led by 12 points over
Dryfe. At the end of the junior volleyball and basketball, Annan
had caught up with Milk to share the lead.
By the end of the senior volleyball and basketball games, Milk
had managed to regain a narrow lead to claim victory.
Final result:
1st Milk 120 points
2nd Annan 118 points
3rd Dryfe 110 points
4th Kirtle 82 points
Well done to all participants.

the Gymnastics squad and the Under-14 Football team were highly
commended and the winning team was the sailing team of Fergus
Barrie, John Beardon and Jessica Campbell who were the 2009 schools

at Senior level at the National Championships.
In the vote of thanks Mr Ferrie thanked the PE staff for their

and teams and support staff – Mrs Gilliland (certificates), Mrs
