Lockerbie Academy Sports Club Awards

Over 200 pupils filled the Academy’s Assembly Hall to receive their awards as members of the schools’ Sports Club. Marion Murdoch was guest of honour and the school was delighted to welcome such a well known name from the world of curling.

Mr Ferrie, the MC for the afternoon, explained that the Sports Club encouraged not only participation but also achievement, and that Sports Club awards ranged from Level 1 (Participation) to Level 5 (National level/Regional Captain).

The first sports to receive certificates were girls’ football and boys’ football at Under-13, Under-14 and Under-18 levels.

After these awards the House Sports results were announced. Miss Cook, Principal Teacher of PE, said:

This year due to the early Easter weekend and the loss of our playing fields, the games ran over 2 days instead of the usual 3, with the outdoor matches being played at King Eddy’s park and the primary school.

The hockey and football games were completed in dry but very cold conditions on Tuesday with Milk and Annan houses enjoying most success here.

At the end of day 1, Milk house was leading by 1 point.

After the junior indoor matches on Wednesday morning, the running total remained the same, so all to play for in the senior games in the afternoon.

Kirtle house achieved their first real success of the competition by winning the senior basketball!! However, Annan, Milk and Dryfe houses all produced strong performances to share most of the points.

Thanks to the senior Sports Captains for selecting and organising their teams, especially the captains who made sure ALL their players present were used in a fair and sporting manner.

Well done to all participants who represented their house.

Final result:

4th - 112 points Kirtle
3rd - 145 points Dryfe
2nd - 155 points Annan
1st - 164 points Milk

The next sports to be represented were hockey and badminton and then the PE specific awards were presented to:

Higher (Jack Copeland)
Intermediate 2 (Nathan Muir)
Sports Leadership (Max Rogers)

A very large number of certificates were presented to the rugby players and then the gymnasts who included Regional winners were presented with their medals. They were:

Clare Jennings
Nicole Laurie
Linzi McLelland
Amy Henderson

The very successful basketball club were the next award winners and the school expressed it’s gratitude to Robin Laidlaw who was stepping down from coaching the basketball team after 15 years of service.

At this point it was noted that pupils succeeded in many other sports including fishing, sailing, table tennis, fencing, athletics and air rifle shooting. Of course it was very appropriate to mention another year of curling success with Anna Sloan being runner up in the Scottish Junior Championship, skipping the school team to the quarter finals of the Scottish Schools and taking part in the European Mixed Championships. Hannah Fleming’s rink of Alice Spence, Kimberly Smith and Kirsten McNay won the Hay Trophy and the U/21 Grand Slam. Stuart Hardie’s rink also had a successful year and won the Staff VAT Shield Competition.

Finally the main three awards were announced. The short leet for teams of the year were:

Regional Schools Sailing Regatta Team
Level 1 Gymnastics Team
Curling Team skipped by Hannah Fleming

With the winners:

Senior Basketball Team

The girls’ sports personality of the year short list was:

Anna Sloan (Curling)
Alice Back (Athletics)
Hope Robertson (Athletics)
Kathryn Williamson (Shooting)

With the winner Kirsty Liddon (Triathalon) and the shortlist for the boys sports personality of the year was:

Andrew Williamson (Fencing)
Calum Main (Table Tennis)
Mark Porteous (Table Tennis
Jack Copleland (Football)

With the winner being Calum Tollick (Regional Badminton)

Finally a vote of thanks was given to the PE department, Mrs Gilliland for producing all the certificates, Mr Bowman for the “Stars of Lockerbie Academy” slide show, all the coaches of teams (both staff and parents) and Marion Murdoch.

The pupils were encouraged to keep participating in their sports and achieve their best by showing a good attitude, practising hard and harnessing their skills to the full.
