Careers
Education
Careers
education is a feature of the social education programme from
S2 onwards.
A very full careers section has been developed in the library.
In addition, from September to November there is for S4 pupils
a comprehensive programme of "Careers Conventions" with
up to 40 contributors.
Regular contact with the Careers Adviser is maintained. The Careers
Adviser visits the school, seeing pupils on a self-referral basis
and is also present at Parents' Evenings. The Careers Service
maintain an up-to-date bulletin board in the school.
The Careers Adviser is also available outwith school hours and
during school holidays at the Careers Office, Loreburn Centre,
High Street, Dumfries, Telephone 01387 272500 or Fax 01387 272520.
Contact with parents is actively encouraged.
A computer with "Kudos" careers software is situated
in the School Library, giving pupils the opportunity to find information
about jobs and the qualifications required, and all S3 pupils
are trained in the use of this software.
All pupils are supported and advised, particularly at the crucial
decision-making points at the end of S2 and S4, about appropriate
careers to match their abilities and aspirations.
A 16+ Prospectus, giving detailed information about the Careers
programme, is available on request from the school or can be viewed
online.
Progress File
All students receive a Progress File when they leave school. Not
only does this contain all examination details but it also shows
positive aspects of a students' school career. Pupils work on
these from S1 onwards. Students are actively encouraged during
Social Education to record their achievements in their Progress
File. These Progress Files are often requested at interviews for
work, college and university.
