Lockerbie
Academy has had for many years a comfortable and well-stocked
library, which is staffed by the Library Assistant, Mrs Langlands.
Junior classes visit the library with their English teacher every two
weeks and senior pupils make use of its resources for study and
research. The English Department makes considerable use of the library
to foster personal reading amongst pupils, and many other subject areas
employ its resources for project work. At interval and lunchtime pupils
are able to visit the library to borrow books, carry out research or use
the computers. When there is demand, for example in the run up to exams,
the library stays open for an hour after school two evenings a week to
allow for quiet study.
All of the library computers are on the school network and pupils
are allowed, under supervision, to access it for school related
work.

The library has a computerised cataloguing
system which has increased the speed and efficiency of the library
service and allows more time to be spent helping pupils with searches.
The school’s careers resources are housed in the library and pupils can
find information on how to go about choosing a career and what
qualifications, if any, they may need to pursue their choice.
The school library is a significant asset in the development of reading
skills in pupils of all ages and abilities and is an important source of
information for course work. Parents are asked to encourage their
children to make good use of it.
