USA Trip 2008
Lockerbie Academy
pupils first visited the USA in 2006 and in October 2008 the second
group of 32 pupils and 3 members of staff made the trip to the
States. The trip was officially entitled a ‘Citizenship Trip’
reflecting the main focus of the itinerary.
The party stayed in Manhattan over the Columbus Day holiday weekend
before travelling to Washington DC via the Civil war battlefield
at Gettysburg.
Highlights in New York included tours of Manhattan, a boat trip
on the Circle Line, the view of the city from the ‘Top of the
Rock’, and a performance of Mamma Mia! on Broadway.
In Washington the party visited the main government buildings
including the Capitol as well as all of the important national
monuments. We were granted permission by Arlington National Cemetery
to hold a small ceremony at the Lockerbie Cairn in commemoration
of the 20th anniversary of the Lockerbie disaster after which
Mrs Bannister laid a laminated photograph of the monument in Lockerbie
cemetery on the cairn. We also visited the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum and the Newseum which covers all aspects of media.
The pupils on the trip were a credit to the school, their families
and the wider community of Lockerbie in terms of their behaviour,
general demeanour and genuine interest in the varied aspects of
the visit. This was not only my impression but was commented on
by tour guides, hotel staff and coach drivers on several occasions
throughout the trip. Click
