Citizenship Summary Policy 2008

Lockerbie Academy has launched its EfC policy documents and you can read the summary statement below. Please take time to read the document as it outlines targets for the next few years and highlights how important a role our school plays in developing Responsible Citizenship in our local, national and global community.

LOCKERBIE ACADEMY
EDUCATION for CITIZENSHIP
SUMMARY POLICY STATEMENT

This document is to be used as a summary policy statement for access by all within the Lockerbie school community and any other interested parties outlining the principles which the school holds in relation to Education for Citizenship (EfC). This document is accompanied by a more detailed working policy statement which includes details of the audits and a more in depth indication of the delivery of EfC within and beyond the school.

Rationale

Lockerbie Academy fully recognises the need to engage with and prepare students for their important role in successfully participating in a modern democratic, multicultural and increasingly complex society. We see EfC as the opportunity for young people to further develop their:

Knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland’s place in it
Understanding of different beliefs and cultures
Ability to make informed choices and decisions
Understanding and evaluation of environmental, scientific and technological issues
Informed, ethical views on complex issues
Awareness as they mature of widely held social values
Ability to develop and act on opportunities related to critical and independent thinking
Active role in the wider school community(ies)

Audits

Over the last 15 months 3 audits of our provision of EfC have been carried out including a very detailed survey of the views of staff within the school. We asked 50 pupils from the House Council and all teaching and some non teaching members of staff their views. Members of the local community were asked to comment on how they perceived the role of the school within their community. A more detailed analysis of the audits can be seen both in the working document and in the school online audit responses.

Delivery

Every staff member at Lockerbie Academy is aware that it is part of their core duties to develop responsible citizenship in all of our students as they move through the school building on past experiences and allowing individuals to mature and develop.

We aim to embed EfC across all subject areas in the curriculum and ensure it becomes a clear focus for inter disciplinary and cross curricular working which will increase in the next few years. At Lockerbie we are very proud of the wide variety of opportunities which exist for all our students from extra curricular clubs and sports to those on a more international/global basis. We will continue to provide a high quality of provision in this area and will develop this further when opportunities arrive.

What We Have Achieved

We have raised the profile of EfC across the school for staff and pupils through meetings, assemblies and a variety of other approaches
We have changed our Pupil Council set up due to feedback from pupils and now consult annually with pupils on the School Improvement Plan. Members of the S6 Steering Committee meet with SMT four times during the year to discuss Council minutes and prioritise action points
We continue to involve the Community in the running of the school and aim to make our School- Community links stronger
We encourage our students to get involved in local decision making within the community. We have many students on Community Councils, we have one pupil elected to the Scottish Youth Parliament and have taken part in the recently launched “I’m a Councillor” project
We are heavily involved in the Eco School project and are moving towards the Silver Standard award
We have an extremely strong Enterprise in Education core group set up in the school in which Citizenship and its development plays an extremely active role. Enterprise Education is recognized throughout the Region and Nationally as being integrated extremely well into the daily lives of pupils at Lockerbie Academy and Citizenship education has worked in cooperation with this
Lockerbie Academy has adapted its PSE materials in recent years to meet the new demands of a fast changing world with new challenges and there is an increasing awareness of the importance of effective Personal and Social development
We involve students in agreeing classroom codes for behaviour/learning and teaching
We do give a great deal of choice to pupils to make decisions within lessons and certain units of work
Many senior pupils have influence on a number of whole school committees allowing them a direct say in important school decisions
There are a variety of top quality assemblies presented by both staff and pupils focusing on a wide variety of school, local, national and global issues
There are many pupil led activities within the school such as organizing Charity events and awareness raising days
Participation by a wide range of pupils in important working groups such as the new school build

Action Plan (2008 - 2011)

We need to use the working document as a tool to ensure all staff are aware of their responsibilities in relation to the delivery of EfC. The delivery of Citizenship is an ongoing and dynamic process and as such a regular review of its delivery must take place.

Publicize the new CfE policy by a number of high profile events within the school and wider community eg with a noticeboard in the local supermarket and litter campaigns in the local towns and villages
Ensure all staff when developing new CfE courses are integrating responsible citizenship at the core of their learning. All faculties must be aware of the importance of this as we move into a new area of detailed curricular innovation
Further raise understanding of critical thinking and active learning and ensure that staff aim to develop these areas within their core teaching. We recognize further and adopt as necessary these techniques to enhance the teaching and learning process
Be more confident that when a student is not studying a Humanities subject post choice that they are still opportunities to learn about many areas of Citizenship through other providers/agencies within the school
Continue to build on our strengths in International Education/Global Citizenship through new areas such as the South African link school
Continue to raise the profile of Eco School and move towards the Green Flag award
Be positive and explore and carry out a number of cross curricular projects/themes within the new curricular changes planned
Ensure that cross cutting themes such as Sustainability, Creativity, Enterprise and Healthy Living integrate with ideas about Citizenship and dovetail positively within the curricular changes in a more structured way
Ensure pupils are more aware of the term citizenship and most can use the term accurately in describing their achievements and progress within the school community
Recognise that progression must be inbuilt and that pupils should experience key ideas throughout school life
Ensure that the PPP School Committee has staff and pupils represented on it and that they feel their views are listened to and that information is communicated to all interested parties
The CfE Committee ensure that in their discussions over the next few years the delivery of effective citizenship is integral in their work
In relation to the local community continue to build on our already positive links especially in relation to the new school build
Further advance links with parents through the newly created Parental Forums and Information Evenings
Attempt to engage with our various communities based around the school on a more structured basis retaining the Academy at the centre of all that is inclusive. Feedback on the role of the school must be sought in a variety of new ways and we must listen and act upon the feedback provided
